Japan in 10 Days — Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka & Mount Fuji from India

Japan is the trip that surprises everyone — neon Tokyo, serene Kyoto temples, Osaka's street food and Mount Fuji rising over it all, stitched together by impossibly punctual bullet trains. Ten days is the ideal length for a first visit, letting you balance big cities with slower, traditional days. It is one of the pricier trips from India and needs a visa applied for in advance, but the sheer ease, safety and wonder of travelling here make it a once-in-a-lifetime favourite that lives up to the hype.

This itinerary anchors you in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka with a Mount Fuji excursion, using the shinkansen to glide between them. You will mix iconic sights with food markets, gardens and day trips. Expect roughly ₹1.8L–3L per person all-in depending on flights, season and whether you buy a Japan Rail Pass, which can save serious money on long hops.

Your day-by-day Japan plan

Tokyo

Days 1–3 — Tokyo

3 nights

Plunge into the capital — Shibuya crossing, Asakusa's Senso-ji temple, Shinjuku nightlife, Akihabara and the teamLab digital art museums. Day-trip to Nikko or Kamakura if you want a breather. Three nights barely scratches Tokyo's surface.

Mount Fuji excursion

Day 4 — Mount Fuji excursion

day trip / 1 night

Head to the Fuji Five Lakes or Hakone for that classic mountain view, hot-spring onsen baths and the Hakone ropeway. On a clear day Fuji is unforgettable; book around good weather, as clouds often hide the peak.

Kyoto

Days 5–7 — Kyoto

3 nights

Take the shinkansen to Japan's cultural heart — Fushimi Inari's red torii gates, Kinkaku-ji golden pavilion, Arashiyama bamboo grove and Gion's geisha district. Slow mornings at temples and gardens make this the trip's most serene stretch.

Days 8–9 — Osaka

2 nights

Shift to Osaka, Japan's kitchen — Dotonbori neon, takoyaki and Osaka Castle. Easy day trips to Nara's bowing deer and giant Buddha, or Himeji Castle. Lively, friendly and a perfect food-forward finale.

Day 10 — Departure

Day 10

A relaxed last morning for souvenirs and one final bowl of ramen before flying out of Osaka's Kansai or back via Tokyo. Pace the day around your flight time so the trip ends calm, not rushed.

What to budget for

  • Covers Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and a Mount Fuji excursion in ten days by bullet train
  • A pricier trip from India — budget around ₹1.8L–3L per person all-in
  • Indians need a Japan tourist visa applied for in advance — it is not visa-free on arrival
  • The shinkansen and a Japan Rail Pass make intercity travel fast but factor in the pass cost

Best time to visit

Late March to early April is the famous cherry-blossom (sakura) season — gorgeous but the busiest and priciest, with hotels booked months ahead. Autumn (late October to November) rivals it for beauty with fiery red-and-gold foliage and milder crowds. Summer is hot and humid with a rainy spell in June, while winter is crisp and cheaper, with snow up north and clearer Fuji views. For the best balance of weather, scenery and value, target April–May or October–November, and remember Indians must arrange the Japan visa in advance regardless of season.

Good to know before you go

  • Indian passport holders need a Japan tourist visa applied for in advance through the official channel — it is not visa-free on arrival
  • Getting around is best by train — a Japan Rail Pass can pay off for Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka hops, plus IC cards (Suica/ICOCA) for cities
  • Currency is the Japanese Yen — carry some cash as smaller shops and shrines may not take cards; convenience-store ATMs work well
  • Book cherry-blossom season hotels months ahead and consider a pocket Wi-Fi or eSIM, as connectivity makes navigation far easier

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 10-day Japan trip cost from India?

Roughly ₹1.8L–3L per person all-in. Return flights run about ₹50k–95k, hotels ₹6k–14k a night, plus a Japan Rail Pass, food and attractions. It is one of the pricier trips from India, but the experience consistently justifies the spend.

Do Indians need a visa for Japan?

Yes. Indian passport holders must apply for a Japan tourist visa in advance through the official application process — there is no visa on arrival. Apply a few weeks ahead with your itinerary, financial documents and confirmed bookings.

Is 10 days enough for Japan?

Ten days is ideal for a first trip — comfortably covering Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and a Mount Fuji excursion by bullet train. With more time you could add Hiroshima, Hakone overnight or the Japanese Alps. Less than a week feels rushed for these distances.

Is the Japan Rail Pass worth buying?

It depends on your route. For the classic Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka loop with day trips, a 7-day JR Pass often pays for itself versus individual shinkansen tickets. Add up your planned long journeys against the pass price before deciding — sometimes single tickets win.
