Sri Lanka in 7 Days: Hills, Beaches & Heritage
Sri Lanka packs an astonishing variety into a small island — misty tea hills, ancient temples, leopard safaris and palm-fringed beaches all within a few hours of each other. Seven days is enough to do the classic loop down the middle and along the south coast without rushing, and it's one of the best-value, easiest first trips from India: short flights, friendly visa, and low on-the-ground costs.
The route below goes from the cultural triangle and hill country down to the beaches — and includes the famous Kandy-to-Ella train, one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world. You can flex the ending toward more beach or more wildlife depending on what you love. Here's the day-by-day, plus when to go and roughly what it costs.

Your day-by-day Sri Lanka plan

Days 1–2 — Kandy
Ease in at the cultural heart of the island. See the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, stroll Kandy Lake, catch an evening Kandyan dance show, and visit the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens. It's a gentle, atmospheric start before the hills.

Days 3–4 — Ella & the hill country
Take the Kandy-to-Ella train — book a window seat for the tea-plantation views that make this one of the world's great rail journeys. In Ella, walk to the Nine Arch Bridge, hike Little Adam's Peak at sunrise, and tour a working tea factory. Cool, green and the highlight for many.

Day 5 — Safari at Yala or Udawalawe
Drop down to a national park for a morning game drive. Yala has the highest leopard density in the world; Udawalawe is the surer bet for big herds of wild elephants. An early start is worth it for the light and the sightings.

Days 6–7 — South coast & Galle
Finish at the beach. Base in Mirissa or Unawatuna for surf, whale-watching (in season) and palm-lined sand, and spend an afternoon wandering the Dutch-colonial ramparts of Galle Fort at sunset. The relaxed end the trip earns.

Best time to visit
Sri Lanka has two monsoons hitting opposite coasts, so the 'best time' depends on your route. For this central-and-south-coast loop, the sweet spot is December to April, when the south and west are dry and sunny — peak season, but ideal for the beaches and hill country. May to September is the southwest monsoon (wetter south coast) but better for the east coast instead. The hill country around Ella is cool and pleasant year-round but can be misty; mornings are clearest. Book the Kandy–Ella train seats ahead in high season, as reserved seats sell out.

🎯 Build My Sri Lanka TripGood to know before you go
- ›Indian passport holders need Sri Lanka's ETA (electronic travel authorisation), applied for online before travel — quick and inexpensive; check current rules.
- ›Hire a car-with-driver for the whole trip (cheap by Indian standards) — it's the easiest way to link Kandy, Ella, the safari park and the coast; the train is for the scenic Ella leg specifically.
- ›Reserve the Kandy-to-Ella train's reserved-class window seats in advance; the unreserved carriages are a scrum in season.
- ›Currency is the Sri Lankan rupee; carry some cash for small towns and park fees. Dress modestly at the Temple of the Tooth (covered shoulders and knees).
Frequently asked questions
Is 7 days enough for Sri Lanka?
Yes — a week comfortably covers the classic loop: Kandy, the Ella hill country with the scenic train, a safari, and the south-coast beaches with Galle. It's a small island with short hops, so you see a lot without rushing.
How much does a 7-day Sri Lanka trip cost from India?
Roughly ₹50,000–80,000 per person including flights, a car-with-driver, good guesthouses or hotels, a safari and food. Low on-the-ground costs and short flights make it one of the best-value international trips from India.
What is the best Sri Lanka route for a week?
Kandy → Ella (via the scenic train) → a safari at Yala or Udawalawe → the south coast (Mirissa/Unawatuna) and Galle. It flows from culture to hills to wildlife to beaches with short drives between.
Is the Kandy to Ella train worth it?
Absolutely — it's one of the most scenic train rides in the world, winding through tea plantations and misty hills. Book a reserved window seat ahead in high season and sit on the right-hand side leaving Kandy for the best views.
