Kashmir in 6 Days: Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam & Sonamarg

Kashmir packs more scenery into six days than almost anywhere in India — mirror-still Dal Lake at dawn, the gondola climbing Gulmarg's snowy slopes, pine valleys around Pahalgam and the glacier views at Sonamarg. This itinerary keeps Srinagar as your base for the houseboats and shikara rides, then loops out on day trips so you are not packing every night. Expect ₹25,000–₹40,000 per person for six days including a houseboat stay, shared cabs and meals.

The valley is compact, so distances feel longer than the kilometres suggest — mountain roads, army checkpoints and weather slow things down. Build in buffer time, keep one flexible day, and do not try to add Doodhpathri or the Tulip Garden into an already-full plan. A relaxed six days beats a rushed one, and the houseboat morning on Dal Lake is the memory most people come home talking about.

Your day-by-day Kashmir plan

Srinagar

Day 1–2 — Srinagar & Dal Lake

Base: Srinagar

Arrive, settle into a houseboat and take a sunset shikara ride past the floating gardens. Next morning see the Mughal gardens — Nishat and Shalimar — and the old city. A shikara hour runs about ₹600–₹800.

Gulmarg

Day 3 — Gulmarg

Day trip · ₹740–₹1,600 gondola

A two-hour drive to the meadow town, then the Gondola cable car. Phase 1 reaches Kongdoori; Phase 2 climbs toward Apharwat for snow even in summer. Book gondola tickets online to skip queues.

Pahalgam

Day 4 — Pahalgam

Day trip

The Lidder valley town is the prettiest drive of the trip, roughly 2.5 hours each way. Local cabs run you to Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari valleys, which private vehicles cannot enter. Budget ₹2,000–₹3,000 for that local taxi.

Day 5 — Sonamarg

Day trip

The meadow of gold sits about three hours from Srinagar on the Leh highway. Take a pony or short trek toward Thajiwas glacier for close-up snow and ice. Start early — the road gets busy and weather shifts by afternoon.

Day 6 — Slow morning & departure

Departure day

Keep this light: a final shikara ride, Kashmiri kahwa, and shopping for pashmina, saffron or walnut woodwork before your flight. Leave buffer time for Srinagar's airport security, which is stricter and slower than most.

What to budget for

  • Fly into Srinagar — it saves a long, winding road day versus Jammu.
  • One houseboat night on Dal Lake is plenty; the rest in a city hotel is comfier.
  • Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg work best as separate day trips from Srinagar.
  • Carry layers even in summer — mornings and high points stay cold year-round.

Best time to visit

Kashmir is a year-round destination but the experience changes completely by season. April to June is spring into early summer — tulips bloom, gardens are lush, and temperatures are pleasant, making it the most popular window. July and August stay green and are good for escaping mainland heat. September to October brings golden autumn chinars. For snow, December to February turns Gulmarg into a skiing and powder destination, though some passes and the Sonamarg–Leh road close. Avoid the peak Amarnath yatra weeks if you want quieter roads around Pahalgam.

🎯 Build My Kashmir Trip

Good to know before you go

  • Fly into Srinagar (SXR) directly; from there hire a verified taxi-union cab or book day-trip cars through your hotel.
  • At Pahalgam and Sonamarg you must switch to local union taxis and ponies for the inner valleys — outside vehicles are barred, so factor those fixed-rate charges in.
  • Carry a government photo ID at all times; expect checkpoints, and book Gulmarg Gondola tickets in advance online to avoid long queues.
  • Mobile data can be patchy and postpaid SIMs work more reliably than prepaid — download offline maps and keep some cash, as ATMs thin out beyond Srinagar.

Frequently asked questions

How many days are enough for Kashmir?

Six days is the sweet spot — two for Srinagar and Dal Lake, then one each for Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg, with a relaxed departure day. Five works if you drop one day trip.

Is Kashmir safe for tourists?

Tourist areas — Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg — are generally calm and heavily geared toward visitors. Follow local advisories, carry ID for checkpoints, and avoid wandering off into restricted or border zones.

What is the cost of a Kashmir trip for 6 days?

Roughly ₹25,000–₹40,000 per person excluding flights, covering a houseboat night, hotels, shared day-trip cabs, gondola and meals. Peak season and private cabs push it higher.

Is one night on a houseboat worth it?

Yes — a dawn shikara ride and breakfast on Dal Lake is the signature Kashmir experience. One night is usually enough; many travellers prefer a city hotel for the remaining stay.
