Meghalaya in 6 Days: Shillong, Cherrapunji & Dawki
Meghalaya is the Northeast at its most photogenic — the boat that seems to float on Dawki's glass-clear Umngot river, the double-decker living root bridge grown over generations, and waterfalls tumbling off the Cherrapunji plateau. This six-day plan flies you into Guwahati, drives up to Shillong, and loops through the rain-carved south. It is a road-trip itinerary with some hiking. Expect ₹22,000–₹38,000 per person for six days excluding flights.
Distances are short on the map but slow on the ground — hilly roads, single lanes and frequent stops mean a 60-km hop can take three hours. The living root bridge trek at Nongriat is a serious 3,000-step descent and climb, so pace it. A homestay night near Cherrapunji or Mawlynnong puts you closer to the sights and lets you start before the day-trip crowds arrive from Shillong.

Best time to visit
Meghalaya is best from October to April, after the monsoon's heaviest rain has eased. October and November bring clear skies, full waterfalls and the clearest water at Dawki, making it the prime window. December to February is cool and crisp — pleasant for sightseeing, though high points get cold and misty. March to April warms up and stays scenic before the rains return. Avoid June to September: Cherrapunji and Mawsynram are among the wettest places on earth, trails turn slippery, and Dawki's river runs muddy rather than glass-clear.

🎯 Build My Meghalaya TripGood to know before you go
- ›Fly into Guwahati (GAU) in Assam — Shillong has a small airport with limited flights, so most travellers drive up the 3–4 hour hill road.
- ›There is no train into Meghalaya; hire a private cab or use shared sumos for the loop, and keep a flexible schedule as hill roads are slow.
- ›Indian nationals need no special permit, but carry ID near the Dawki–Bangladesh border, and note Dawki boat rides and some sites charge fixed local fees.
- ›Wear proper trekking shoes for the Nongriat root-bridge steps, carry cash as ATMs are sparse outside Shillong, and pack a rain layer even in the dry season.
Frequently asked questions
How many days are enough for Meghalaya?
Six days covers the highlights comfortably — Shillong, Cherrapunji, the double-decker root bridge trek, and Dawki with Mawlynnong, plus travel buffer. Four to five works if you skip the toughest trek.
How do you reach Meghalaya?
Fly into Guwahati airport in Assam, then drive about 3–4 hours up to Shillong. There is no railway into the state, so a private cab or shared sumo handles all onward travel.
Is the living root bridge trek difficult?
Yes — the double-decker bridge at Nongriat involves descending and climbing around 3,000 stone steps. It is doable for reasonably fit travellers but tough; allow a full day and wear good shoes.
When is Dawki river clearest?
From October to April, after the monsoon, when the Umngot river runs glass-clear and boats appear to float on it. During the rains the water turns muddy, so avoid June to September.
